Proper Messy was an interactive drama for BBC Switch, developed in partnership with Conker Media, that I pitched, developed and produced from the BBC’s side.
The story was told in real time, through a series of text-messages and optional images and video clips sent to the audience’s mobile phone. The audience were encouraged to interact with one of the two main characters and respond to the drama as it played out across the day.
Each day users received texts from one of the main characters, which formed part of the longer running story arc.
In addition, the central characters (Jake and Imogen) had active Bebo pages with additional content (blogs, video blogs, images) and comments from the audience.
Away from the mobile platform, a weekly episode (6 x 90 seconds) was created to set-up the following week’s story and shown in BBC Switch’s zone on BBC Two, as well as online.
It was a closed pilot for 5000 13-17 year old UK teens (although anyone could enjoy the online and TV content) and ran for 36 consecutive days (6 Saturdays) starting 24th January 2009.
